What does lip liner do? How to use it?

Applying lip liner before your lipstick or lip gloss helps prevent the color from bleeding or feathering–making it a dream for dark lipstick lovers. Rather use lip liner as a base. Simply lining and filling in your lips with a pencil will give your lip color something to adhere to, thus increasing its staying power. If all that lip liner seems a little daunting, start with a clear lip pencil, like Laura Mercier Lip Pencil in Clear or Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liner in Clear. Clear pencils do the same job as all the other shades.

A lip liner is a makeup tool that essentially helps to shape and define the natural contour of the lips. While applying lipsticks, the colour often tends to bleed and/or feather, the application of a lip liner helps to lock the colour in place. Also, quite a number of times, application of matte and/or dark coloured lipsticks, makes your lips look smaller, due to loss of definition of the natural contour. Prior application of a lip liner solves the issue.

How to use Lip-liner:

Choose a nude shaded lip liner. (Nude is a universal shade that matches with any lipstick colour, also defines the lip shape in a natural fashion)
Using the pencil, lightly trace the natural outline of your lips. Be sure to emphasize your Cupid's Bow, as this is the part that catches most of the light.

Follow with your lipstick or lip-gloss.

If you are using a dark shade, such as red, please buy a lip liner pencil of the same colour. Trace the outline, then fill in your lips with the pencil. Apply your lipstick atop. This helps to secure the colour in place and also enhances the texture.
Hope this was useful!

I like to use Lip Liner to line my lips and to fill them in.  It gives my lipstick additional staying power.  I prefer to match my lip liner to my natural lip skin although clear lip liner is helpful as well.
