How to Lighten Dark Lips Naturally

There are many factors that can affect our lips and cause them to darken such as- exposure to sun’s UV rays, caffeine, smoking and the use of low-quality makeup. It can cause some of us to feel self-conscious and sometimes it can be frustrating when the lips products don’t show up their true colour.

Want healthy, pink lips? In this post, I will be sharing my tips on lightening pigmented lips and protecting your natural lip colour . Enjoy!
TIPS:
  • Cut back on dark liquids (tea, coffee, red wine)- it can stain your lips, instead use a straw
  • Exfoliate regularly– the dead skin cells on the surface of your lips can cause discolouration and unevenness
  • Stay hydrated to prevent dry lips
  • Remove your lipstick 100% before sleep– certain chemicals in the lip products can cause discolouration
  • Use lip balm with SPF– protect your lips from the sun’s UV rays
  • Stop licking your lips! leads to dehydration and chapped lips
Exfoliate (Lip lightening scrub)

Gently exfoliating your lip is not only great for keeping them healthy and smooth, but it also promotes the growth of new skin cells which in turn helps to lighten your lips. I will be sharing my HOLY GRAIL DIY lip scrub which is super nourishing and will lighten dark, pigmented lips with its natural bleaching properties.

The citric acid found in lemons bleaches discoloured skin by regulating  melanin production, while the honey possesses hydrating and healing properties which leaves the lips smooth and pink! Lastly, the sugar acts as a gentle, abrasive exfoliant which removes the dead skin cells.
Now you can make your very own lip scrub with this super easy recipe:
Ingredients:
  • 1 tbsp Granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp Honey
  • 1 tbsp Lemon
  • Small container
Directions:
  1. Combine the 3 ingredients in small container and mix well
  2. Using your fingers apply the mixture onto your lips
  3. Massage the mixture in GENTLE, circular motions for 2-5 minutes (try not to be too harsh to avoid rips)
  4. Rinse well. Use daily for several weeks to get fast results!
  5. Store the excess in a plastic container for future use
TIPDon’t have time to make the scrub? Simply use a soft bristled brush to gently exfoliate the lips and get rid of the dead skin cells for smooth plump lips.
Treat with Beetroot

Beetroot works wonders in lightening your lips! Women have used it for many centuries to make their lips healthy, plump and pink. Beetroot contains natural lightening agents which helps to cleanse and effectively lighten pigmented lips. I like to apply the beet juice right after I exfoliate my lips. Below is my favourite way to use beetroot:
Ingredient:
  • 1 beetroot
  • Blender/processor
  • Muslin cloth
Directions:
  1. Peel and chop a fresh beetroot
  2. Grind it into a paste using a blender and extract the juice using a muslin cloth
  3. Transfer the beet juice into a container (keep it in fridge or up to one month)
  4. Apply the juice directly onto your lips for effective results
  5. Use it overnight or apply it during the day for instant pink lips
BONUS: Beet juice work great as a natural lip tint!!

Moisturize (Almond oil & Shea butter)

Almond oil soothes, nourishes and lightens lips by fading dark spots through melanin breakdown. I like to rub pure almond oil into my lips at night everyday and in the morning my lips are extremely soft…seriously! It’s a not only great cure discoloured lips, but also provides intense moisture for chapped lips. Moist lips will naturally look healthier and pinker.

Recently, I’ve been loving applying 100% Shea butter onto my lips because it is ultra-moisturizing and keeps my lips soft, hydrated and rosy pink. You can replace this with your regular lip balm.

QUICK FIXES?

  • Use a tinted lip balm to get naturally looking pink lips
  • Make your own lip gloss using Vaseline and a matte pink eye shadow to add a healthy flush of colour
